What is guaifenesin/dextromethorphan used for?
Guaifenesin/dextromethorphan is used to treat coughs that contain mucus (productive cough).
Do not take guaifenesin/dextromethorphan.
• If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medication.• If you are taking MAOIs or have taken them for at least two weeks.
Warnings and Precautions
Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including if you have:• If you have a long-term cough due to asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).• If you have a cough with a lot of mucus.If you have a cough for more than 7 days or if you have other symptoms, contact your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistering, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is unknown.
Side effects include:• Drowsiness• Stomach pain• Nausea• Vomiting
Other Medications and Guaifenesin/Dextromethorphan
• Tell your doctor about all the medications you take.• Guaifenesin/Dextromethorphan interacts with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used for depression or Parkinson's disease. Do not take guaifenesin/Dextromethorphan within 14 days of taking an MAOI.
How to Take Guaifenesin/Dextromethorphan
• This medication is for adults and children 6 years of age and older.• Take this medication as directed by your doctor.• Measure liquid doses carefully.• Adults and children 12 years of age and older: The usual dose is 10 mL every 4 hours.• Children 6-11 years of age: 5 mL every 4 hours.
How to Store Guaifenesin/Dextromethorphan
• Store at room temperature 68-77°F (20-25°C).• Keep this medication out of reach of children.• Do not use this medication after the expiration date on the carton.
