Product Description

Cefixime Oral Suspension 100 mg/5 ml

What is Cefixime and what is it used for?

Cefixime is an orally active, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with in vitro bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
It is used to treat the following acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms:

· Upper respiratory tract infections: e.g., otitis media, where the causative organism is known or suspected to be resistant to other commonly used antibiotics, or where treatment failure would entail significant risks.
· Lower respiratory tract infections: e.g., bronchitis.
· Urinary tract infections: e.g., cystitis, cystourethromycin, and uncomplicated pyelonephritis.

What you need to know before using cefixime

Do not use cefixime

If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, or to any other cephalosporin or penicillin medicines.

Warnings and Precautions

· The dose should be adjusted according to the degree of renal impairment.
· Cefixime can predispose to the risk of encephalopathy (which may include convulsions, confusion, impaired consciousness, and movement disorders), especially in cases of overdose or renal impairment.
· Cefixime may cause acute renal failure.
· A false-positive reaction for glucose in the urine may occur with Benedict's or Fehling's solutions or with copper sulfate test tablets, but not with tests based on glucose oxidase enzyme reactions.
· A false-positive direct Coombs test has been reported during treatment with cephalosporin antibiotics, so it is important to be aware that a positive Coombs test may be due to the drug.

Other medications and cefixime

· Regular monitoring of prothrombin time is required if cefixime is combined with warfarin.

How to use cefixime

· Cefixime is used orally.
· The usual course of treatment is 7 days. This may be continued for up to 14 days if necessary.

· Elderly:
· Elderly patients can be given the same dose as adults. ·     Kidney function should be evaluated and the dose adjusted in cases of severe renal impairment.
·     Children under 10 years:
