Why is Glibenclamide used?

Glibenclamide (also known as glyburide) is used to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes as an addition to a healthy diet and exercise.

Do not take Glibenclamide:

• If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

• If you have type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes.

• If you have diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where blood sugar levels are very high and you experience nausea, frequent urination, fatigue, and muscle weakness).

• If you are in a diabetic coma.

• If you have serious liver problems.

• If you have kidney problems.

• If you are taking a medicine called bosentan for high blood pressure.

Warnings and Precautions:

Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including: You have:

• If you are recovering from an injury, operation, or infection with fever or other forms of stress.

• If you have liver or kidney problems.

• If you have a deficiency of an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD).

• If you have heart disease.

This medication may cause low blood sugar, especially if you miss a meal, exercise a lot, or drink alcohol. Signs of low blood sugar include nausea, hunger, shakiness, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, trouble speaking, and sweating. You may eat a sugar cube or some juice.

Possible side effects:

Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is unknown.

Glibenclamide interacts with many medications, including:

• Pain and inflammation medications

• Other diabetes medications

• Anticoagulants such as warfarin

• Medications used to treat irregular heartbeat

• Medications used to lower cholesterol

• Medications used to treat mood disorders

• Certain antibiotics

• Antifungals

• Cancer medications

• Birth control pills

• Medications for asthma and nasal congestion

• Steroids

• Medications for stomach ulcers such as cimetidine

• Phenytoin

How to take glibenclamide:

• This medication is for adults only.

• Take this medication as directed. Your doctor.

• Take this medication with food, with the first meal of the day.

• The usual starting dose is 2.5 to 5 mg once daily.

• Your doctor may gradually increase your dose to 20 mg as one or two doses daily.

How to store glibenclamide:

• Store at room temperature between 68 and 77°F (20 and 25°C).

• Keep this medication out of the reach of children.

• Do not use this medication after the expiration date on the carton.
