Clarithromycin is used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria sensitive to clarithromycin.
 
Do not take clarithromycin:
If you are allergic to the active ingredients, to the macrolide group, or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
if you are taking any of the following medicines: cisapride, pimozide, astemizole, terfenadine, ergotamine or dihydroergotamine, lomitapide, simvastatin or lovastatin.
If you are taking colchicine and have kidney or liver disease.
If you have an irregular heartbeat called long QT intervals.
 
Warnings and precautions:
Tell your doctor about all of your health conditions, including, if you have:
If you suffer from liver and/or kidney disease.
If you suffer from any heart problems.
If you have low levels of potassium and magnesium.
Do not use for longer than directed. A second infection may occur.
This medicine may worsen symptoms of myasthenia gravis.
 
Possible side effects:
Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; Itch; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking; Unusual hoarseness or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is unknown.
 
Common side effects:
nausea;
Diarrhea.
Change in the ability to taste.
upset stomach;
headache;
Changes in the functioning of the liver.
Skin rash (in children).

How to take clarithromycin:
Take this drug as directed by your doctor.
Take the extended-release tablets with food.
Swallow the extended-release tablets whole. Avoid chewing, breaking, or crushing.
Dosages may vary depending on the location and severity of the infection.
The usual dose is 500 mg every 12 hours. This is equivalent to 1 gram of an extended-release tablet once daily.
In children, dosing is based on the child"s body weight in mg / kg / day. The usual dose is 15-20 mg/kg/day.
 
How to store clarithromycin:
Store at room temperature from 68 to 77 degrees F (20 to 25 degrees C).
Store away from light.
Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton.
