What are Trajenta tablets and what are they used for?

Trajenta belongs to a group of medicines called "oral antidiabetics". Oral antidiabetics are used to treat high blood sugar levels. They work by helping the body reduce the level of sugar in the blood.

Trajenta is used for type 2 diabetes in adults, if the disease cannot be adequately controlled with a single oral antidiabetic drug (metformin or a sulfonylurea) or only diet and exercise. Linagliptin may be used with other antidiabetic medicines such as metformin, a sulfonylurea (such as glimepiride, glipizide), empagliflozin, or insulin.

Do not take Trajenta:

• If you are allergic to linagliptin or any of the other ingredients in Trajenta.

What are the warnings and precautions for Trajenta?

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Trajenta if:

• You have type 1 diabetes (your body does not produce any insulin) or diabetic ketoacidosis

• you are taking an anti-diabetic medicine known as a “sulfonylurea” (such as glimepiride, glipizide),

• Your doctor may want to reduce your dose of sulfonylureas when you take them together

• Linagliptin in order to avoid low blood sugar.

• You have had an allergic reaction to any other medicines you take to control the amount of sugar in your blood.

• you have or have had a disease of the pancreas.

What are the possible side effects of Trajenta?

You should stop taking Trajenta and see your doctor right away if you have the following symptoms of low blood sugar: shivering, sweating, restlessness, blurred vision, tingling lips, paleness, mood changes or confusion (hypoglycemia). Hypoglycemia (frequent: very common, may affect more than 1 in 10 people) is a side effect identified when linagliptin is taken with metformin and a sulfonylurea.

Some patients have had potentially serious allergic reactions while taking linagliptin alone or in combination with other diabetes products, including wheezing and shortness of breath. Some patients have had a rash, hives (urticaria), and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat that may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing (angioedema). Some patients have developed inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) while taking linagliptin alone or in combination with other medicines to treat diabetes.

Some patients have experienced the following side effects while taking linagliptin alone or in combination with other medical products to treat diabetes:

• Common: High level of lipase in the blood.

• Uncommon: inflammation of the nose or throat (nasopharyngitis), coughing, constipation (combined with insulin), elevated serum amylase.

• Rare: blistering of the skin (bullous pemphigoid).

Other medicines and Trajenta:

In particular, you should tell your doctor if you are using medicines containing any of the following active ingredients:

• Carbamazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin. These may be used to control seizures (fits) or chronic pain.

• Rifampicin. This is an antibiotic used to treat infections such as tuberculosis.

How is Trajenta taken?

You can take Trajenta with or without food.

Your doctor may prescribe linagliptin in combination with another oral antidiabetic medication. Remember to take all medications as directed by your doctor to achieve the best results for your health.

How should Trajenta be stored?

• Keep Trajenta out of the reach and sight of children.

• Do not use Trajenta after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and box after EXP. The expiration date refers to the last day of the same month.

• Trajenta does not require any special storage conditions.
