What is desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol and what it is used for:

This medicine is a combined oral contraceptive pill ("the pill"). You take it to prevent pregnancy.

This low-dose contraceptive contains two types of female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone. These hormones prevent the release of an egg from the ovaries so you don"t get pregnant. It also makes the fluid (mucus) in the cervix thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.

This pill is a 21-day pill - you take a pill every day for 21 days, followed by 7 days when you"re not taking pills.

The benefits of taking birth control pills include:

It is one of the most reliable reversible contraceptives if used correctly

It usually makes your period regular, lighter and less painful

It may help treat premenstrual symptoms.

Desogestrel ethinyl estradiol will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia or HIV. Only a condom can help do this.

What you need to know before using desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol.

Do not use desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol.

Tell your doctor if you:

if you have (or have ever had) a blood clot in a blood vessel in your legs (deep vein thrombosis, DVT), your lungs (pulmonary embolus, PE) or other organs;

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to any of the ingredients in desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol.

If you have hepatitis C and take medicinal products containing ombetasvir/baritaprevir/ritonavir and dasabuvir.

Warnings and precautions:

You should tell your doctor:

If you notice possible signs of a blood clot it could mean you have a blood clot in the leg (such as deep vein thrombosis), a blood clot in the lung (ie a pulmonary embolism), heart attack or stroke

If you have heart, circulatory or blood clotting problems.

If you suffer from diabetes.

If you have ever had kidney or liver problems.

If you have ever suffered from severe depression.

Other medicines and desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines.

Some medicines may stop desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol from working properly. These include medicines used to treat:

epilepsy (primidone, phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, topiramate, felbamate, modafinil);

Tuberculosis (rifampicin).

HIV infection (ritonavir, nelfinavir, nevirapine, efavirenz);

hepatitis C virus infection (such as boceprevir, telaprevir);

other infectious diseases (eg, griseofulvin);

high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs (Bosentan);

Depressive mood (St. John"s wort herbal remedy).

How to use desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol:

To prevent pregnancy, always take this medicine exactly as prescribed in this leaflet or as you have been told by your doctor, family planning nurse or pharmacist. Consult your doctor, family planning nurse, or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Take desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol every day for 21 days.

Desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol comes in strips of 21 tablets, each marked with the day of the week.

Take the pill at the same time every day.

Start by taking a tablet that says the correct day of the week.

Follow the direction of the arrows on the tape. Take one tablet each day, until you have finished 21 tablets.

Swallow each tablet whole with water if necessary. Do not chew the pill.

Then you have seven pill-free days.

After you have taken all 21 tablets in the box, you have seven days when you do not take tablets. So if you take the last pill from one pack on Friday, you will take the first pill from your next pack on Saturday of the following week.

Within a few days of taking the last pill from the pack, you should have menstrual-like withdrawal bleeding. This bleeding may not be over by the time you start your next pack of pills. You do not need to use additional contraception during the seven pill-free days - as long as you have taken your pills correctly and started your next pack of pills on time.

Then start the following tape:

Start taking the next strip of desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol after seven pill-free days - even if you are still bleeding. Always start a new can on time.

Possible side effects:

Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you notice:

How to store desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol:

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Do not use desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiration date refers to the last day of the same month.

Store desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol below 25°C but not in the refrigerator. Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
