Betahistine dihydrochloride is a medication used to treat Meniere's disease, which manifests itself in three distinct symptoms: vertigo (dizziness associated with vomiting or nausea), tinnitus (hearing sounds in the absence of external sounds, such as ringing in the ears), and hearing loss or impaired hearing.
It is also used to relieve the symptoms of vestibular vertigo (dizziness even when not moving).
Do not take Betahistine Dihydrochloride:
If you are allergic to Betahistine Dihydrochloride or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Tell your doctor about the allergy and any signs you experience.
Warnings and Precautions:
Stop taking this medicine immediately and consult your doctor or pharmacist if you experience allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, rash, swelling of the face or neck, low blood pressure, and dizziness.
Talk to your doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve after a few weeks.
Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you have bronchial asthma (a respiratory disease that causes breathing problems such as shortness of breath and wheezing)or if you have ever had a stomach ulcer. Your doctor will monitor you closely if you have bronchial asthma or a history of stomach ulcers.
Do not repeat the same prescription without consulting your doctor first.
Possible side effects:
Common side effects are indigestion, nausea, and headache.
Other side effects (frequency unknown) are allergic reactions (such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing),gastrointestinal side effects (such as abdominal pain, flatulence, and vomiting),and allergic reactions of the skin or subcutaneous tissue (such as hives, itching, rash, or sudden swelling of the neck, face, or extremities).
Other medicines and betahistine dihydrochloride:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, herbal products, vitamins, and supplements.
Tell your doctor before starting this medicine if you are taking antihistamines (primarily used for allergies, nausea, and to help you sleep).
How to take betahistine dihydrochloride:
Adults and the elderly
The recommended total daily dose is 24 to 48 mg, divided into several doses given throughout the day.
If you are using 8 mg betahistine dihydrochloride: Take 1-2 tablets by mouth three times a day.
If you are using 16 mg betahistine dihydrochloride: Take ½ to 1 tablet by mouth three times a day.
If you are using 24 mg betahistine dihydrochloride: The total daily dose is 48 mg, divided throughout the day. Your doctor will adjust your dosage if necessary, depending on how you respond to the medication.
Children (under 18 years of age)
This medication is not recommended for use in children due to a lack of evidence of effectiveness and safety.
Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
It may take up to two weeks for symptoms to begin to improve. It may also take a few months to achieve optimal relief.
Treatment is more likely to prevent disease progression and hearing loss that may occur later if you start treatment early in the disease.
The dose of this medication does not need to be adjusted if you have liver or kidney problems.
You can take this medication with meals or reduce the dose if you experience gastrointestinal side effects (such as abdominal discomfort, bloating, nausea, or indigestion).
How to store betahistine dihydrochloride:
Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
Store this medication at room temperature (below 30°C).Do not use this medication after the expiry date printed on the carton.Keep the medicine in its original package to protect it from moisture and light.
