Product Description

Paracetamol 500mg/Codeine 8mg/Caffeine 30mg Tablets

What is Paracetamol/Codeine/Caffeine and what is it used for?

This medicine contains three active ingredients: paracetamol, codeine, and caffeine. Paracetamol belongs to a class of medications known as pain relievers and antipyretics. Codeine phosphate belongs to a class of medications known as opioid analgesics, a mild pain reliever and cough suppressant. Caffeine is used to increase the absorption of paracetamol and enhance its analgesic effect. This combination of active ingredients is used to relieve moderate pain.

Do not take Paracetamol/Codeine/Caffeine

• If you are allergic to paracetamol, codeine, caffeine, opioid analgesics, or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Tell your doctor about the allergy and any signs you experience.

• If you are taking other products containing acetaminophen. Make sure not to exceed the dose.

• If you have breathing difficulties or asthma.

• If you suffer from chronic constipation.

• If you are breastfeeding.

• If you have recently had bile duct surgery.

• If you are taking or have taken within the last 14 days medicines known as MAO inhibitors (used to treat depression).

• If you have had a previous head injury or a condition that causes increased pressure inside the skull.

• If you know that your body normally converts codeine to morphine very quickly.

Do not give paracetamol/codeine/caffeine to patients:

• If you have severe obstructive sleep apnoea (breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep) aged 18 years or younger and who have had a tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy.

• If you have children under 12 years of age.

Warnings and Precautions

• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, low blood pressure, or dizziness.

• Be sure to tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, including alcoholic liver disease, or if you have mild arthritis (arthritis) and need to take painkillers daily.

• Long-term use of this medicine may be harmful to your liver.

• Contact your doctor if symptoms do not improve.

• Tell your doctor if you are intolerant to some sugars or have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

• Tell your doctor if you are a chronic alcoholic, have had your gallbladder removed, are malnourished or dehydrated, have a thyroid or abdominal problem, low blood pressure, or hemolytic anemia (a type of anemia).

• Tell your doctor if you have glutathione deficiency.

• Talk to your doctor if you weigh less than 50 kg.

• Make sure you take this medication at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest possible time.

• Make sure you avoid excessive consumption of caffeine-containing products (such as tea, coffee, and some canned drinks). Taking this medication with caffeine-containing products may cause jitteriness and irritability.

• This medication has been shown to convert to morphine in some patients. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you experience side effects of this medication's rapid conversion to morphine, such as confusion, eye constriction, slow or shallow breathing, constipation, drowsiness, nausea or vomiting, and decreased appetite. Stop the medication immediately if you experience any of these signs.

Possible Side Effects of Paracetamol/Codeine/Caffeine

Possible side effects of Paracetamol/Codeine/Caffeine include signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash and itching, and signs of breathing problems, such as difficulty breathing, which are more likely to occur if you have previously experienced them after taking painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen. These include sudden weight loss, nausea, yellowing of the skin and eyes, loss of appetite, unexplained bleeding or bruising, and stomach pain. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, worsening headaches, and dependence if used for a long time.
