Mechanism Of Action Of Atorvastatin

• Atorvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication that belongs to the statin class of drugs. Statins lower cholesterol levels in the blood by blocking 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A(HMG-CoA) reductase, an enzyme that's needed for the liver to produce cholesterol.
• Decreased hepatic cholesterol concentrations stimulate the upregulation of hepatic low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors, which increases hepatic uptake of LDL & decreases LDL level in the blood.

• It is used to lower lipids known as cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood when a low-fat diet and lifestyle changes on their own have failed.
• Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the body necessary for normal growth. However, if there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up on blood vessel walls, increasing the risk of blood clots and cardiovascular events. Method Of Administration Of Ld-Nor 20 Mg Tablets

• The usual starting dose of Atorvastatin is 10 mg once a day in adults and children aged 10 years or older.

• Atorvastatin tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water, with or without food.

• Do not take Atorvastatin:

4. If you are a woman able to have children and not using reliable contraception
5. If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
6. If you are breastfeeding
7. If you use the combination of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir in the treatment of hepatitis C
8. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before taking Atorvastatin:
9. If you have severe respiratory failure
10. If you are taking or have taken in the last 7 days a medicine called fusidic acid, (a medicine for bacterial infection) orally or by injection. The combination of fusidic acid and Atorvastatin can lead to serious muscle problems (rhabdomyolysis)
11. If you have had a previous stroke with bleeding into the brain, or have small pockets of fluid in the brain from previous strokes
12. If you have kidney problems
13. If you have an under-active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)
14. If you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains
15. If you have a personal history or family history of muscle problems
16. If you have had previous muscular problems during treatment with other lipid-lowering medicines (e.g. Other ‘-statin’ or ‘-fibrate’ medicines)
17. If you have a history of liver disease
18. If you are older than 70 years
